The doctoral journey as laid out by Grand Canyon University is intended to take roughly three years. However, after inspection of the website and specifically the “life cycle” portion of the site, it is evident that the first two years of a doctoral student is spent truly understanding the topic of the intended dissertation followed by intense course work that builds up the skills required to begin creating the paper that will detail out the hard work that the student has undergone. Once the student does achieve the third year, then the learner will move through nine milestones rapidly to achieve the intended goal. There are a lot of milestones set for the students, however, they are laid out in a manner that sets small achievable goals for a year that lead to the ultimate goal of successfully completing the dissertation. This journey is difficult and met with many obstacles that are not laid out in the “life cycle” due to many variables that can happen in the individual student’s life (Gardner, & Holley, 2011), however, there is a community set up for the doctoral students of Grand Canyon University that help aid them especially with encouragement throughout the process.

The doctoral DNA resource page is a wealth of information and a reminder of why I began this journey. The Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership program will hopefully help me grow and develop into a thoughtful leader who values her teachers and pupils. I am hoping that this program will mold me into an effective communicator, critical thinker, and a responsible and understanding servant leader. The doctoral DNA will help me prepare for my doctoral journey in the way that the program scaffolds the curriculum, integrates dissertation practices, and provides thorough feedback on my writing to ultimately achieve my dissertation goals.
I would be doing myself a disservice if I didn’t acknowledge how afraid I am on this journey. On the cusp of my third class in this program, I find myself wondering what I am doing here. With the completion of this course, there are only three more courses in my first year! I will be a second-year doctoral student and just twenty-four short weeks. I know that it doesn’t seem like much, but I still feel like I don’t belong. I am battling imposter syndrome (Gardner & Holley, 2011). Here I am, three degrees later, as a teacher, mother, and student, I feel out of place here on this academic plan. I pray that God gives me the strength to continue along this path that he has sent me on because I know that all things are possible through Christ, and without his help, leadership, and guidance, I would not be long for this world.

Revisit the definition of leadership you constructed in Module 1. Based on your experiences engaging with the course readings, discussions, and assignments, in what ways has your definition of leadership changed? Explain. How has your worldview influenced the nature and extent of these changes? Explain. How do you now view yourself in the context of organizational leadership or as a leader of others? My experiences with the course materials and discussions have broadened my definition of leadership to include aspects of traits, behaviors, and styles. I maintain my opinion that a leader is a representative of a group, and no matter the style, leadership is an influential force that focuses on adaptive and constructive change (Northouse, 2016). However, ethics has been an added component to my conceptualization of leadership. Prior to this course, I had not actively thought about my worldview impacting my understanding of leadership. The course readings and further literature review revealed to me the impact an educational leaders behaviors has on both perceptions and organizational productivity (Webster & Litchka, 2020). I now acknowledge that authentic and ethical response to diverse needs of followers is essential for effective leadership (DenHartog & Dehoogh, 2009). With this new outlook on leadership, I recognize the importance of ethical behaviors, as well as the impact authentic recognition of differences can have on my own leadership effectiveness. In regards to my dissertation, Ive gained a better understanding of the significance of best practices and evidence-based practices on both students and teachers within special education. I plan to explore the academic effects of specific co-teaching models on learning objectives within the inclusive classroom, primarily so that I can better lead special and general education teachers to more intentional and effective teaching.

As Northouse (2016) stated, any member of a group in any setting can be a leader, it is not something of a personality trait that is inside us.In the behavioral educational setting, there are leaders who are vocal but also have a great work ethic who are able to pay attention to detail of what is going on around them.My experience with the course readings, discussions, and assignments have helped me broadened my thinking of how leadership is perceived.Emulating the style of others or flexing your own in new ways does not make you inauthentic; it means your growing as a leader (Peterson et. al., p. 75, 2020).My definition of being a leader has changed after realizing that a leader is not someone who just leads, but someone that the followers look up to and able to take the blame when failure shows up regardless if it was not their fault.I now realize that being a leader is being true to oneself and being able to help others that need it.My worldview has been influenced by the changes over the readings and seeing how the leaders at my school show how we can make it through this difficult transition from going from in-person teaching to remote-teaching and then to hybrid-teaching.The organizational leadership that has been displayed this year from the leaders while standing by their side really shows the difficult decisions that are made as a leader. How this influences my dissertation topic is very little, but it shows that the fight I have to advocate for myself during this difficult time, knowing that I am able to make it through with the support of my organization and the leaders. The influence shown has made me think of how difficult it is to work in a behavioral residential program doing in-person teaching and remote learning at the same time, but also shows me the leader I look up to is there for us in our time of need.It shows me what is needed to be displayed as a leader regardless of the decisions that are made.
